Womack Votes to End Biden’s Political Raid of Emergency Oil Reserve

Womack cosponsored bill aims to end President Biden’s use of the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve as a cover-up solution for his anti-American energy agenda

Washington, DC – January 27, 2023….Following President Biden’s actions to drain America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) to historic lows, Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) took action and voted to pass his cosponsored Strategic Production Response Act. The bill is focused on restoring U.S. energy independence by preventing abuse of the SPR and requiring the White House to put forth a plan to increase domestic production.

Congressman Womack said, “The Strategic Petroleum Reserve exists for emergency situations—not disastrous Democrat policies. President Biden depleted our stockpile for political purposes, making us less safe and more reliant on adversaries. This bill reverses that dangerous trend and restores an all-of-the-above resource strategy. Our nation is safer and stronger when we are energy independent.”

The legislation—part of the House Republican Commitment to America—prohibits the Secretary of Energy from tapping the SPR for non-emergency reasons unless they have a direct plan to increase the percentage of federal lands and waters leased for oil and gas production. It compels the Biden Administration to replenish and maintain our emergency stockpile and ensure we are prepared for true energy supply emergencies.

This is Womack’s latest action to strengthen domestic energy and protect industry jobs. This month he also helped the House pass legislation to ban SPR sales to the Chinese Community Party. He’s continually called on the White House to reverse its regulatory attack on U.S. energy production. His actions include advocating to end the federal freeze on all new oil and gas projects, fast-track pending LNG export permits, expedite approval of all pipeline and energy development, and rescind unilateral mandates straight out of the Green New Deal playbook. His priority is advancing an all-of-the-above energy strategy.

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
