House Passes Continuing Resolution; More than $100 Billion in Cuts WASHINGTON–Congressman Steve Womack and his fellow House Republicans went above and beyond their “Pledge to America” by passing a Continuing Resolution that cut more than $100 billion from President Obama’s FY11 request. The historical vote came in Saturday’s early morning hours after four full days of debate and more than 400 amendments filed. Congressman Womack, a member of the House Appropriations committee, released this statement following the vote: “We, as members of Congress, have been charged with representing the voters of our districts, states and country. For the past few years, Washington has been spending at an alarming rate without any form of consideration regarding the fiscal consequences. While the rest of the nation has had to tighten their financial belts, the government has loosened theirs. If America’s people must live within their means, shouldn’t its leaders do the same? The answer is yes. This is just the beginning. More cuts will continue on every level and some will be difficult, even painful in some eyes, but I assure you it’s nothing more than growing pains. We will get this great country back on track and getting our financial house in order is the first step.” -Congressman Steve Womack In December, Democrats failed to pass a budget for FY11, forcing the government to operate on the same unsustainable budget as in 2010. ### |
