Womack Votes to Protect Communities from Influx of Illegal Immigrants

Washington, DC—November 30, 2023…Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the following statement after voting for H.R. 5283, the Protecting our Communities from Failure to Secure the Border Act of 2023:

Congressman Womack said, “The President’s open border policies have led to a historic influx of migrants, causing a humanitarian, public health, and national security crisis that has had ripple effects across our country. Makeshift shelters for illegal immigrants at national parks are the latest security and safety concerns. I’m proud to support H.R. 5283 to stop incentivizing further waves of illegal immigrants by providing them with free housing. I will continue to take whatever actions necessary to restore operational control at the border.”

H.R. 5283 would prohibit any federal funding, including new leases or contracts, from building illegal immigrant housing on lands owned by the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, and Bureau of Land Management. The bill also revokes the Biden Administration’s lease to build migrant shelters on National Park Service land in New York City.

Womack has been a steadfast advocate of border security and committed to enacting strong reforms to fully revamp our immigration policies. He has seen the devastation at the southern border firsthand, voted to authorize border wall construction, called for reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” policy, expressed the need for elimination of catch and release measures, and previously supported comprehensive proposals that would have delivered a working, lawful, and effective immigration system.

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
