Womack Statement on New Record High Gas Prices

Washington, DC—June 9, 2022….Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the below statement as gas prices, once again, hit an all-time national high:

“Americans are seeing their wallets run on empty just to fill their tanks. The White House’s attack on U.S. energy has ushered in the highest gas prices in history—but President Biden continues to escalate his failed policies that created this cost burden. We must unleash domestic production. An abundant, reliable, affordable, and all-of-the-above energy approach can—once again—be our future if Democrats reverse their crippling energy agenda.”

Background:

  • When President Biden entered office, gas prices were at an average of $2.39 per gallon. The average is now over $4.97 per gallon.
  • Skyrocketing gas prices will now cost the average American household an extra $2,000 per year.
  • Just this year, American families will spend $5,000 on gas, a 78 percent increase from a year ago, with nearly two-thirds saying that rising gas prices have prompted them to cut household expenses.
  • President Biden has implemented an anti-American energy posture that has contributed to skyrocketing energy prices and empowered our adversaries abroad. He canceled the Keystone XL pipeline, froze leases for new exploration, put a moratorium on new drilling, canceled oil and gas lease sales in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico, and drained our emergency Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
  • Congressman Womack has continually called on the White House to reverse its regulatory attack on U.S. energy production, which would include actions to end the federal freeze on all new oil and gas projects, fast-track pending LNG export permits, expedite approval of all pipeline and energy development, and rescind unilateral mandates straight out of the Green New Deal playbook.
  • The U.S. has the world’s largest oil and gas reserves, we can produce these energy resources more cleanly and efficiently than anywhere else in the globe, and we should produce them.

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
