Womack Statement on Democrat Deeming Resolution, Failure to Produce Real Budget

Washington, DC—June 8, 2022….Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the below statement after House Democrats once again failed to produce a budget for Fiscal Year 2023. Instead, they are purposely diverting from proper budget and appropriations processes to allow them to continue their out-of-control spending habits without debate or accountability. The American people haven’t seen a legitimate budget produced in the House since Womack was Chairman of the Budget Committee:

“What is the point of a House Budget Committee that doesn’t produce a budget? The duty is in the title. Every year since holding the majority, House Democrats have failed to develop a real fiscal blueprint. And this latest deeming resolution is the definition of laziness. It’s a gimmick and reflection of their intent to spend without regard for the burden they are forcing on our children and grandchildren. They’re working to spend trillions of taxpayer dollars without having to debate, amend, or say where your money is going. It’s on purpose. Speaker Pelosi doesn’t want to answer to or have Americans see the inflation, taxes, and generational theft they are fueling.”

Womack has consistently advocated for solutions to fix the broken budget and appropriations process, which has failed the American people for too long. He co-chaired the Joint Select Committee on Budget and Appropriations Process Reform and introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation to modernize and streamline current processes. Some of the reforms he supported would have helped prevent a budget and appropriations deadline crisis like the one the Democrats have created. Additionally, he called for moving to a biennial budget, ensuring realistic deadlines for Congress to complete its budget and appropriations work, and requiring a joint Budget Committee hearing on the Fiscal State of the Nation. The FY2019 budget Womack authored as the Chairman of the House Budget Committee was the last comprehensive fiscal blueprint produced by the House Budget Committee.

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
