Womack Statement on New Russia Sanctions
Washington,
April 15, 2021
Washington, DC – April 15, 2021....Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) today released the below statement regarding President Biden’s announcement of new sanctions targeting Russian entities and officials: “Russia is an adversary, and I fully support the new sanctions imposed on Moscow by the White House. However, we must double down on these measures. The Kremlin’s hostile actions in the region and work to undermine the West’s democratic institutions won’t stop. To forcefully hold Putin accountable and further restrict funding for his malign activities, the Administration knows we must also sanction the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline. I feel strongly that these penalties should have been included in this package. Every effort must be made to halt this project.” Background: The Nord Stream 2 Pipeline is a Russian-backed project that will allow them to weaponize the European energy supply and exert undue pressure on our allies. Womack is committed to stopping the construction of this Putin pet project. He is an original cosponsor of the Protecting Europe’s Energy Security Clarification Act of 2020, legislation that clarifies and expands sanctions on the construction of the Nord Stream 2 Pipeline, which was included in and signed into law as part of the William M. (Mac) Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2021. Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee. ### |
