Womack Statement on the Biden Administration’s Infrastructure Plan

Washington, DC—March 31, 2021….Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the following statement after President Biden announced his Administration’s infrastructure plan today:

“From one former mayor to another, I think Secretary Buttigieg and the President should be straightforward with the American people about this proposal. It’s not about infrastructure or jobs. I’ve led economic development efforts—and the Administration has woefully missed the mark. This plan imposes one of the largest tax hikes in American history to dispatch trillions of dollars for Green New Deal and left-wing social policies that have nothing to do with our roads and bridges. Reminiscent of their last liberal catch-all spending bill, Democrats are again turning their backs on implementing focused and effective policy. It’s the wrong approach.”

Additional background:

  • Less than 30% of this package is dedicated to our roads, bridges, transit, rail, airports, ports, and other traditional transportation infrastructure.
  • Biden’s corporate tax hike to 28%, in addition to state corporate taxes, would drag the United States back to having the highest combined corporate tax rate in the developed world, 9 percentage points higher than the average of developed nations. It would be more competitive to do business in Communist China, which has a corporate tax rate of 25%.
  • Nonpartisan congressional budget scorekeepers estimate that workers will bear about 25% of the Biden tax increase, while other economic experts put that share much higher, at 50%, or even 70%
  • The plan includes mandates related to union organizing, Medicaid, increasing IRS audits, and other unrelated policies.

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
