Womack Floor Speech: This Bill is Not About COVID Relief
Washington,
February 26, 2021
Washington, DC—February 26, 2021....Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) delivered remarks during tonight’s debate on H.R. 1319, the Democrats’ nearly $2 trillion liberal wish list bill. The hyper-partisan package is filled with far-left priorities and wasteful spending on things unrelated to coronavirus, including job-eliminating and anti-work provisions, a slush fund for mismanaged states, multi-employer pension bailouts, a bridge from New York to Canada, an underground railway to Silicon Valley, environmental justice grants, and more. Womack – who will vote against the bill – has emphasized the need for targeted, transparent, and fiscally responsible legislation. Watch Congressman Womack’s floor speech here. Transcript of remarks: “Madam Speaker, I think a little honesty is in order. “It’s no secret that this so-called “American Rescue Plan Act” has little to do with the hardships placed on Americans by COVID. “When 90% of a spending plan—rammed through on a sham of a budget resolution—gets spent years down the road, and much of it has little to do with coronavirus, we should at least be honest with our constituents. “It’s apparently Christmas again. “Here’s an example. What does the multi-employer pension issue have to do with the pandemic? Remember the failed Joint Select Committee in 2018 tasked with solving that crisis. That was long before COVID. “But here we are about to vote to spend $85.6 billion on this bailout. 85.6 billion is DOUBLE the amount we appropriate for NIH annually. “Look, before we ask future generations to float us another $2 trillion to pay off those liberal promises, let’s at least have the integrity to admit this really isn’t about COVID-19. “I yield back the balance of my time.” Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee. ### |
