Womack Statement on the Biden Administration’s Extension of U.S.–Russia Arms Deal
Washington,
February 3, 2021
Washington, DC – February 3, 2021…Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the following statement after the Biden Administration announced a five-year extension of the New START treaty. The agreement as written fails to add standards that block Russia's new classes of nuclear weapons or include China in multi-lateral arms control negotiations: “President Biden has granted Putin’s wish by unconditionally extending the New START treaty. It’s a handout to our adversary that fails to add needed standards to block Russia's new classes of nuclear weapons. Giving Moscow free rein to advance their arsenal without consequence is bad policy and a clear negotiations failure. It sets a concerning precedent as other geopolitical rivals, including China, ramp up weapons stockpiles. We can’t afford a weak posture on critical national security issues.” Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee. ### |
