Womack Votes Against Radical House Rules Package

Washington, DC – January 4, 2021….Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) issued the following statement after voting against H. Res. 8, the House Democrats' Rules Package for the 117th Congress, which would revoke the motion to recommit – a longstanding procedural rule that allows for the minority party to improve legislation – remove vital guardrails against mandatory spending increases, stifle debate on legislation, and eliminate the use of gendered terms like mother, father, and more. It upends decades of procedural precedent and does nothing to help address the immediate challenges our nation faces:

“Since they can’t win on the merits of their policies, Speaker Pelosi and her dwindling majority have decided to hijack the legislative process. The rules package for the 117th Congress is a blatant power grab that seeks to stifle debate and silence opposing voices, while also paving the way for the implementation of radical policies like the Green New Deal. Even more absurd, they have abolished the use of gendered terms like father and mother. This clearly shows that their immediate priorities are scarily out of touch with the needs of families across the nation. These changes are an unprecedented assault on this institution and the voices of millions of Americans.”

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
