Womack Statement on Snapback Sanctions on Iran
Washington,
August 20, 2020
Washington, DC—August 20, 2020….Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the following statement after the United States notified the United Nations Security Council of Iran’s continued nuclear proliferation activities. This complaint will trigger the ‘snapback’ of sanctions on Iran, including the extension of the embargo on conventional arms sales to the Iranian regime. This action taken by the Trump Administration comes after the Security Council defeated a clean resolution from the U.S. to extend the embargo on this known state sponsor of terrorism. Reimposing these sanctions will ensure that the Iranian regime is not able to acquire advanced weapons on its quest to further destabilize the Middle East and destroy Israel. Womack has been a strong advocate for holding Iran accountable and joined a bipartisan letter calling for the extension of the arms embargo in May: “I fully support the Trump Administration’s move to exercise our legal right under international law to reimpose sanctions on Iran and extend the arms embargo. Without this move, Russia and China will be empowered to sell weapons to this hostile regime – and we know they will. They are more interested in lining their pockets with money from Tehran than protecting Middle East stability. No person should want arms in the hands of a known state sponsor of terror whose use of ballistic missiles, support of terrorists, human rights violations, and destabilizing actions regularly threaten the security of America and our allies. We must continue to deter and counter all Iranian threats.” Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Budget and is a member of the House Appropriations defense and transportation, housing and urban development subcommittees. ###
