Womack Statement on House Passage of NFIP Extension

Washington, DC— May 14, 2019….Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) issued the following statement after the House passed the National Flood Insurance Program Extension Act of 2019, which reauthorizes the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through September 30, 2019. The legislation will ensure that there is no lapse in the program, which is currently set to expire on May 31, 2019. The NFIP provides flood polices to millions of households nationwide, including more than 16,800 in Arkansas. Failure to pass an extension of the program would leave communities at risk, disrupt the coverage of millions of American families and businesses, and slow down disaster recovery efforts.

“Whether on the coast or in a land-locked state, it takes just one storm or flash flood to devastate an entire community. Families and businesses in Arkansas and across the country rely on the National Flood Insurance Program to ensure their homes and property are protected, and we can’t leave them on the hook because of gridlock in Washington,” said Congressman Womack. “This extension brings much needed certainty and security to all policyholders as Congress works to institute necessary reforms to the program and pass a long-term reauthorization.”

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Budget and is a member of the House Appropriations defense and transportation, housing and urban development subcommittees.
