Womack Statement on Democrats Failure to Negotiate

It’s time for Democrats to stop the “Pelosi politics” and get serious about resolving government funding and border security

Washington, DC – January 10, 2019….Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the following statement in response to Democrats – who have previously supported border security, including barriers and fences – continuing to put politics before the American people and U.S. national security.

“The partial government shutdown continues this week without a realistic plan to end it—and the consequences continue to grow. We want a secure nation, functioning government, and our federal workers in Arkansas and across the U.S. receiving paychecks. Yet instead of making a real effort to re-open our government and secure our borders, Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer have refused to compromise. This shutdown could end today if Democrats took serious steps to negotiate in good faith.

The debate is no longer on how we can secure our border and get government employees back to work, but rather how many political points Democrats can score against the President. This strategy is irresponsible and amplifies the dysfunction of Washington. I urge my Democratic colleagues to get serious about commonsense border security and workable funding proposals. Congress needs to do its job.”

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on the Budget and is a member of the House Appropriations Committee.
