Womack Statement on Failure to Pass Immigration Bill

Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) today released the following statement after the House failed to pass H.R. 6136, the Border Security and Immigration Reform Act of 2018, by a vote of 121-301.

“There is no doubt that our immigration system is broken, and Congress has the responsibility to fix our outdated and fragmented policies with long-term legislation that starts with encouraging lawful behavior and guaranteeing a secure border. While H.R. 6136 was not perfect, it took crucial steps toward a solution, and I am disappointed that Congress kicked the can down the road on solving for this important issue yet again.

“The need for immigration reform in America has become more than just a talking point; it is an essential undertaking for our country. And until we address the pressing issues of border security, interior enforcement, and visa reform, our fractured system as it exists today will continue to manifest itself in heartbreaking ways. I will continue to work with my House colleagues to promote thoughtful, conservative solutions to appropriately address the immigration crisis and other challenges facing our nation.”

Congressman Steve Womack has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011. He serves as the Chairman of the House Committee on the Budget and is a member of the House Appropriations defense, military construction-veterans affairs, and labor-health and human services subcommittees.
