Womack Statement on Passage Fiscal Year 2018 LHHS Appropriations Bill Through Committee
Washington,
July 19, 2017
Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) released the following statement after the Fiscal Year 2018 Labor, Health, and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (LHHS) Appropriations Bill was passed through Committee: “As the Vice Chairman of the LHHS Subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee, I am proud to join my committee colleagues in passing this vital bill. Among many important aspects, the LHHS bill provides a total of $35.2 billion for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is a $1.1 billion increase in overall funding. These additional funds will continue to advance research into Alzheimer's disease, brain research, and many other medical initiatives. The LHHS funding bill also provides $3.5 billion for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA). SAMHSA will provide the funding needed to assist in defeating the opioid crisis, an ever-growing concern across much of rural America. This discretionary funding bill goes on to affirm programs such as the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) that provide crucial assistance to many across the Natural State. In all, tough decisions were made and I am lucky to have played a small role in Congress’ annual obligation of designating its appropriated, constitutional funding priorities.”
Congressman Steve Womack has represented Arkansas’s Third Congressional District since 2011 and serves on the House Appropriations Defense, Military Construction-Veterans Affairs, and Labor-Health and Human Services subcommittees and the House Committee on the Budget.
