Womack Statement on Anniversary of MFA Passage in Senate
Washington, D.C.,
May 6, 2014
On May 6, 2013, the Senate passed the Marketplace Fairness Act (S. 743/H.R. 684). The bill gives states the ability to require out-of-state sellers to collect sales and use taxes – rather than relying on consumers to remit those due taxes – if states simplify their sales and use tax systems. The bill was referred to the House Judiciary Committee and awaits action in the House. Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3), the original sponsor of H.R. 684, today released the following statement on the one year anniversary of the Senate passage the bill: “Since the Senate passed Marketplace Fairness a year ago, a lot of great work has been done to educate members on the truth of the legislation—it is not a new tax; it is a commonsense bill that levels the playing field for retailers who cannot compete against an unfair tax advantage. “I am hopeful the House can find the will to close this loophole once and for all. Without House action, the problem isn’t going to go away, and our Main Streets simply cannot afford to wait any longer.” ### |
