Womack, Ross on Passage of U.S. Marshals Commemorative Coin Bill

WASHINGTON—On Thursday, the House passed H.R. 886, the United States Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act.

On Thursday, the House passed H.R. 886, the United States Marshals Service 225th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Act.

A few months ago, Congressman Steve Womack introduced legislation to mint a coin to commemorate the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Marshals Service. This coin will serve as a symbol and constant reminder of the character and tradition of one of America’s greatest institutions.

Passage of the bill would not have been possible without the help of several of my colleagues, including fellow Arkansas congressman, Rep. Mike Ross.

The proceeds from the sale of these coins will assist in the preservation and maintenance of artifacts and documents which will be displayed in the U.S. Marshals Museum.  Additional proceeds will go to the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, the National Law Enforcement Museum, and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Womack and Ross released the following statements on the passage of the Marshals Commemorative Coin and what it means to the city of Fort Smith:

Rep. Womack (Floor Video HERE):

“This is a great moment for Fort Smith and the Marshals Museum.  I want to thank my staff, Rep. Mike Ross and our colleagues, as well as the Marshals Museum leadership team.

“Aside from the obvious benefit to Fort Smith—a world class museum—the real prize here is the exposure it gives to one of America’s great law enforcement institutions—the Marshals Service.

    “Merry Christmas, Fort Smith, Arkansas!”

Rep. Ross (Floor Video HERE):

“The U.S. Marshals Commemorative Coin will help celebrate the 225th anniversary of the U.S. Marshals Service and help raise money for the U.S. Marshals Museum in Fort Smith, Arkansas – all without costing the taxpayers a dime.  Home to renowned Judge Isaac Parker’s courthouse, Fort Smith has an important chapter in the history of the U.S. Marshals Service, which is our country’s oldest and most versatile federal law enforcement agency.  I was proud to join Congressman Womack in introducing this bill, and I’m proud to have secured cosponsors to help ensure its passage so that we can recognize the work our marshals do and can honor all those within the U.S. Marshals Service who gave their lives in service to their country.”
