Army Corporal David Bixler, Harrison, has been named USO Soldier of the Year for demonstrating bravery and self-sacrifice in the line of duty while stationed in Kandahar, Afghanistan. On September 30, 2010, Corporal Bixler—in an effort to save his fellow soldiers—lost both of his legs when an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated. Bixler continued to serve as an inspiration, displaying the same acts of valor and selflessness he exhibited on the battlefield, while recovering from his injuries at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Bixler would later be awarded the Silver Star for his heroism. Bixler and his wife, Stephanie, have a 4-year-old daughter, Elaine. For more on Corporal Bixler, click HERE. Congressman Steve Womack released the following statement: “Corporal Bixler is a credit to our nation and service members deployed worldwide who selflessly defend freedom every day. Having earned the Silver Star for his actions in combat clearly places him among our nation’s elite heroes. Our nation is eternally grateful for his service, his sacrifice, and his enduring spirit.”
After House adjournment Thursday afternoon and before heading back to the district, Congressman Womack will be attending the USO Gala in support of Corporal Bixler. Other attendees include General Martin Dempsey (Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff), Alyssa Campanella (Miss USA), Carlos Mencia (Comedian), Karl Malone (NBA Hall-of-Famer), and Country Music great, Randy Travis.
