On Wednesday afternoon, the House voted down H.R. 2698, the Continuing Appropriations Act of 2012, with 48 Republicans voting against the measure. This bill would have funded the government through November 18. This CR called for the same level of funding already agreed upon by both the House and Senate, and signed into law by the president through the Budget Control Act. Congressman Steve Womack released the following statement regarding the House’s Continuing Resolution vote: “While I understand and respect many of my Republican colleagues’ desire for deeper cuts, the fact remains that with this vote, funding government beyond October 1st just got more expensive. If Republicans didn’t like funding at $1.043 trillion, they darn sure won’t accept a higher number that Democrats will surely demand that includes disaster funding without offsets.”
“It was a bizarre debate—Democrats opposing the CR because of disaster funding offsets and Republicans opposing it because it did not cut enough. So, both got their way and America gets to witness and endure another threat of a government shutdown. It’s that—or a much more expensive CR, which I have a hard time supporting. Very frustrating.”
