Congressman Steve Womack, on Tuesday, voted against a bill that would allow the debt limit to be raised without the possibility of putting any restrictions on spending. Not a single Republican voted in favor of H.R. 1954, sending a strong message that any increase in the debt limit must be accompanied by substantial spending cuts and reforms to ensure a commitment to long-term reductions.

This vote sends a clear message to the Administration as well as Democrats that the American people do not support spending money we don’t have.
Congressman Womack released this statement following Tuesday’s vote:
“I have said all along that the fiscal situation facing our nation is among our highest priorities in Congress. It is unconscionable to consider an increase in the debt ceiling without significant and guaranteed limits on federal spending.
“We cannot continue to add to the burden of future generations by ignoring our obligation to control spending.” ###
