WASHINGTON – Congressman Steve Womack released the following statement regarding President Obama’s State of the Union address:

"We heard a very interesting speech from the president tonight. It sounds as though President Obama is starting to hear the cries of the American people. His words were again full of promise, but for two years, it’s been his actions which have shown his true disconnect with the American people. However there’s a different agenda for this new Congress from the Democratic Congress from the past few years. We’re here to cut spending, shrink the size of government, put people back to work and most importantly, protect the liberties that our country was founded upon.

President Obama said tonight that by unfairly taxing a portion of the American people we are promoting America’s success. I say America’s success isn’t based on taxation. America’s success is based on the innovation and entrepreneurial spirit of every American that goes to work every single day.

We are left tonight with words of familiarity. Though optimistic, the promises of hope and change tend to lose meaning the third and fourth time around. From this point forward, it will be actions by which we judge this administration. Time, as well as this Republican Congress, will act as accountability to those words. But at the end of the day, we can all be sure of one thing. The sun will rise tomorrow, shining a light on America's future. Where we go from there is a question we were sent here to answer."
