"I join my colleagues in the United States House of Representatives in extending our deepest condolences to the families of the victims of the horrific shooting that occurred this weekend in Arizona—including our colleague, Representative Gabrielle Giffords.

The attack represents the most egregious act a human being can inflict on another person.  It is a sad and painful reminder of the risks associated with public service and the degradation of the human condition so extreme that such disregard for human life is possible.

We lift up those families who have lost loved ones in this senseless act.  We pray for the recovery of those injured, including Representative Giffords.

I have been in contact with the leadership of the House and will join my colleagues this week in offering whatever support and/or service to the staff of the wounded Congresswoman is necessary.  The legislative agenda has been postponed this week pending the outcome of the investigation of the shooting and any impact on Congressional affairs, as well as the recovery of Rep.  Giffords.

Our staff is taking all prudent and necessary precautions in our district offices pursuant to guidance from the Capitol Police and Sergeant at Arms office in Washington.

As a newcomer to Congress, I did not personally know Rep. Giffords.  Our offices are in the same building (Longworth) and we both read from the Constitution on the House Floor on Thursday; however I have not met her personally.   Those who know her speak highly of her character and dedication to duty."
